Because it can earn you money.

… but perhaps your first question is what is an EPC? An EPC is an Energy Performance Certificate that tells you how energy efficient your building is, and recommends how you might increase your efficiency.

The EPC indicates your property’s efficiency, and if you are grade D or above you qualify for the maximum government Feed-In Tariff for your solar energy. For example, if you install a 4 kW PV system, this could mean you receive £235* a year for 20 years (index linked against inflation).

Since being introduced in law in 2007, the EPC is a requirement for a building to be sold, let or constructed. Once obtained, an EPC is valid for 10 years.

The good news is that you can quickly and easily look up your EPC by address.

If you find you don’t have an EPC already, you can search for a suitable registered assessor using the government portal by clicking here. They are typically inexpensive to get costing from £35 to £50.

Remember, to  qualify for the Feed-In Tariff you need to have your system installed by the end of March 2019.

* The actual figure you receive depends on the exact amount of energy you generate which will vary by year. The estimates are calculated using government mandated tables of figures which show average solar irradiance.
